The Basics

How to Format Your Papers

Please follow MLA format for all papers/essays.

  • Type the paper.
  • Double-space the paper.  (Set line spacing to “2.”)  Unless otherwise directed.
  • The margins should be 1″ on all four sides of the paper.
  • The only acceptable fonts are TimesNewRoman (12 pt.) or Courier (12 pt.).
  • Use white, 8″ X 11″ paper only.
  •  Indent each paragraph 1/2″ (approximately 5 spaces from the left margin).
  • Justify the paper on the left margin only.
  • Type your last name and page number on every page in the top right corner one-half inch from the top.
  • Instead of using a title page, type the following on separate lines on the first page, beginning flush with the top left margin. Your name, teacher’s name, course name, date
  • Center your title on page one

 How to Format Your Emails

When you communicate with me via email, you will practice proper, professional email etiquette. This will prepare you for future communications with professors and employers. Professional communication can often make the difference in whether you get what you want/need from your boss or not. Follow these directions:

  • Use a professional email that utilizes your real name.
  • Always include a subject topic in the subject line.
  • Begin your message with a greeting. ( Good Morning/Afternoon Mrs. Coelho-Tooley; Dear Mrs. Coelho-Tooley)
  • Do not use text language in your message. There is no word limit when you send an email so there is no need to truncate “you” into “u” or “at” into “@”.
  • Write in complete sentences.
  • Sign your message.

Journal/Notebook Policy

Students must maintain a journal for the entire year. Because you will be moving beyond proficient and shooting for advancement in the skills that you learn in this course, it is important that you keep track of it. You will need it to study, take notes, journal and write assignments. Your journal is required in class everyday. It will be graded.

Purchase a composition book or spiral-bound notebook for your journal.

The label/title of the assignment must be at the top of the page on which the assignment resides, along with the date.

Most of the writing assignments will fall into these categories:

  • Notes
  • Reading Journal
  • Quick Write
  • Class Work Assignment
